Corporate confidence in advertising often appears boundless. During the development of a new short take-off and landing cargo plane, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas ran seemingly endless campaigns touting their rival versions of the plane, while at the same time Lockheed’s campaign told the reader that a new plane was unnecessary: the Defense Department could fill its cargo needs with Lockheed’s C-130. Aggressive advertising campaigns also accompanied the competition of United Technologies and Boeing (Vertol) for the Army’s UTTAS helicopter contract and the Navy’s LAMPS helicopter contract in the late 1970s.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the total amount spent on the advertising of defense hardware. According to Advertising Age, military ads are generally only a small portion of overall corporate advertising. Fairchild, they point out, received 60 percent of its sales income from DoD but spent only roughly 25 percent of its advertising budget on such products.12 Standard sources on advertising do not break down data by product line.
